About Casa del Sol

In the 1980’s, a small group of people in the lower Arkansas Valley were ready to move from their own homes, giving up lawn care, snow shoveling, and general upkeep of their property in favor of a retirement setting. By the fall of 1989, land had been purchased. Ground was broken in September of 1991 for the first eight-unit building designed for independent retirement living. With its completion, Piñon as it became known, saw the first group of pioneers move in during the spring of 1992. The next group of eight-plexes, Cedar, Pine, Spruce, and Juniper were completed in 1993, 1995, and 1998, and Ponderosa was completed in 2001. Our first two duplexes were completed in the fall of 2001. Aspen Center was completed in 1999, and it provides much needed office, activity, and dining space. A year later a resident woodworking and maintenance shop was added to our campus. Two more duplexes were added to the campus in 2005, an additional unit will be added during 2006 bringing the total number of units to fifty-eight.

Casa del Sol, with its dedicated community-based board of directors, has been committed to providing an attractive setting for the well being of all its residents. Casa del Sol is a not-for-profit facility sponsored by Colorado Mennonite Retirement Center Inc.

Many people come to us because they know people who are happy living here. Jay and Mary have a different story to tell. They moved to Casa del Sol from the Chicago area. When asked what brought them to La Junta, Mary says, "We just seemed to be drawn to La Junta". Jay jokingly adds, "We have never lived in the Mountain Time Zone". With Jay’s military career they have lived all over the world, but this was one time zone in which they had never lived. They had been through La Junta several times. In December of 2002 as they traveled through La Junta on Amtrak, someone was playing music on a steel guitar in the park across from the train station.

Jay watched and listened until the whistle signaled him to return to the train. Back on the train, they discussed their retirement and decided to return to La Junta for a closer look. They found out about Casa del Sol, came to visit, and decided it was a perfect fit for them. Jay loves the woodworking shop. Mary loves the flowers. We are glad they found us.

Amigos de Casa

Volunteers have always been an integral part of Casa del Sol’s development and growth. As we continue to grow there are more and more ways in which volunteers can be used. For that reason a decision was made to have an official volunteer organization. In the spring of 2000 the group chose this name, appointed coordinators, and began meeting quarterly. There are many people who have special talents to share.

Amigos de Casa provides many opportunities and rewards for being a volunteer at Casa del Sol. If you would like to know more about being a member of Amigos de Casa, call 719.384.0342.
